I was in a terrible relationship for almost two years. It was right after my parents died so I was kind of in a completely bat-shit crazy boozy place. ANYWAY. The relationship eventually became so shitty I finally said, “I’m going ice fishing for three weeks with this girl I barely know. I’ll need you to move out while I’m gone.”

Beats the shit out of my last breakup story… I blocked the number from the jail and sold/chucked all his stuff.

Actually, I think blocking his ass and getting rid of all his useless shit is pretty fucking awesome. Team VSC all the way.

Ruby Rhod is one of my favorite characters in sci-fi ever because he is Luc Besson’s vision of the hetero sex symbol of the future: a flamboyant, emotionally labile man who wears skin-tight leopard print or decks himself in roses, a man who accessorizes with big jewelry and dabbles in cosmetics. And the ladies love him. Everything about him screams “gay” according to our stereotypes, but he’s portrayed as a 100% straight sexual dynamo.

Besson is one of the few directors I’ve seen who actually recognizes that our ideas of sexuality and gender performance might have changed drastically in the future.

Fifth Element. It’s one of the better weird sci-fi films from the 90s. Proper sci-fi, I mean to say, with ‘what if’s and philosophy and so on.

See this lady I’m hugging? That’s my great-grandma. She’s not even 80 (my family had babies young and then there’s me) but don’t let that fool you. I’m pretty fucking sure she’s the mob boss.When she wants something done, it gets done. Sometimes we don’t even know how.

BUT THAT’S NOT WHY I’M TELLING YOU ABOUT HER BECAUSE I COULD GO ON ABOUT MY BADASS G-MA ALL DAY.

This picture was taken during the visit on mother’s day. Now, my grandmother doesn’t like living in a home because she still has her mind. The other residents, unfortunately, do not. There’s not a lot to do and it’s hard for her to get anything when the nurses are pretty preoccupied with the other, less sane residents.

So my dad says “Just act crazy with them. It’ll be fun.”

and I saw my chance

I told her to do something, quietly, so no one would hear. As we were leaving, her personal nurse gave us farewells (and was a bit condescending to G-ma, but I know that can’t be helped). Just before we walked out, the nurse said:

“That was nice of your family to visit.”

“Yeah. Always sad when they have to leave.”

At this point, my grandmother gives me a look and continues speaking:

“But it’s okay, because I’m never alone.”

(pause)

“Oh, what do you mean?”

“I always have my angel with me.”

“Awww like an angel watching over you? Like your husband?”

“No. A different angel. His name is Castiel. He wears a trenchcoat.”

Let me tell you, I have never laughed and cried so hard in my life to watch that nurse’s expression.

THIS IS WHY I LOVE MY G-MA. THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE MY G-MA TOO.

This guy helps rescue three women, and people are making fun of him? Yeah, he used humor when he told the tale, and sure, it’s appropriate to chuckle when he does so. (Like when he said he “knew there was a problem when a young white girl ran into a black mans arms.”)

But to make fun of him? TO MAKE FUN OF HIM? TO DISRESPECT THIS MAN? THIS HERO?

If you’re the kind of scumbag who makes fun of heroes, I suppose you can poke fun at him all you want, but if I’m ever in trouble and need someone to step up the the plate, I hope someone like Charles Ramsey is around.

Charles Ramsey is a hero. The fact that he has a sense of humor and owns his past and has tried to learn from it? Those things make him a good person and a work in progress like the rest of us.
